Ironman New Zealand
SWIM - 3.8km (2.4 mile) swim in the clean, clear, fresh waters of Lake Taupo. Water temperature is normally around 19 degrees Celsius (approximately 64 degrees Fahrenheit). A deep water start in front of the Taupo Yacht Club with the first leg of 1775m parallel to the shore followed by a second leg of 70m then returning 1745m to a buoy adjacent to the Yacht Club. The final section of 210m takes the swimmers to the swim exist adjacent to the Taupo Yacht Club. From the Yacht Club car park athletes have a 400m run along the Boat Harbour to the steps leading to transition. BIKE - The two-lap 180km (112 mile) course starts to the cheers of spectators before heading into the natural forest and farmland surrounding Taupo. The course is described as undulating with enough challenging sections to create a fair race. On the second lap, athletes are greeted by spectators lining the lakefront. RUN - The run course is a three-lap 42.2km (26mile) course leading athletes through town three times. Athletes can take in the flat lakefront scenery to Wharewaka Point and return.
