Alive & Running 5K
More than 32,000 people in the U.S. die by suicide each year – more than by homicide or by AIDS. In fact, every 16 minutes, someone loses their will to live and takes their life. So many people – maybe even your loved one, friend, neighbor, or colleague – suffer from extreme emotional pain in silence. In that moment when a person in crisis needs someone to listen, someone to care, Didi Hirsch’s Suicide Prevention Center is here to help. Last year alone, more than 20,000 people turned to its/our 24-hour Crisis Line last year in their darkest hour. Over the last 50 years, they/we have helped more than half a million people in crisis. You can help save lives by sponsoring Didi Hirsch’s tenth annual Alive & Running Suicide Prevention 5K Walk/Run. The race will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2008 at Westchester Parkway in Los Angeles. More than 4,000 runners, walkers, spectators, and volunteers from all over Los Angeles will join together at Alive & Running to raise awareness and funding for suicide prevention services. Proceeds from Alive & Running directly benefit the Suicide Prevention Center, a program of Didi Hirsch Community Mental Health Center. Founded in 1958, the Suicide Prevention Center was one of the first programs in the U.S. to establish a 24-hour suicide prevention Crisis Line. Celebrating its 50th year of saving lives, the Suicide Prevention Center also provides support for those who have lost a loved one to suicide, outreach to the community, and an emergency response team that works with local police to provide immediate counseling at the scene of a suicide. You can read more about Didi Hirsch’s suicide prevention services on the attached brochure. This year’s Alive & Running will raise financial support critical to Didi Hirsch and its programs. Your support of our race will not only aid our efforts to raise community awareness about the devastating impact of suicide, but may make all the difference to a person contemplating taking his life. For the past 50 years, they/we have been fortunate to have supporters committed to preventing the needless loss of life to suicide. Won’t you please continue to help Didi Hirsch provide these vital services in the years to come? For your review, I have included information about how you can support Alive & Running.
