Long Beach Triathlon

The Long Beach Triathlon is a fast paced three-sport event that will take place on Sunday, September 18, 2011, along the Long Beach City downtown shoreline. “The LB/C.A.R.E Triathlon was created 13 years ago in memory of my brother Kevin. 100% of the proceeds each year go directly to the Comprehensive AIDS Resource Education Program at St. Mary's Hospital in Long Beach to fund numerous services provided to those living in our city with AIDS. My family will be forever thankful for the services they provided when we needed them the most,” says Karen Kachigan, founder of the Long Beach Triathlon. As a sprint triathlon, the race covers roughly half the classic Olympic triathlon distance, where athletes compete in a ½ mile swim, an 11-mile cycling race, and a 3-mile run. This triathlon is ideal for novice and intermediate athletes, yet attractive enough to draw the top tri-athletes on the West Coast circuit. All proceeds from the triathlon go towards supporting the Comprehensive AIDS Resource and Education (C.A.R.E.) program at St. Mary Medical Center, the largest comprehensive HIV provider in the Greater Long Beach area.

The water temperature in Long Beach in September is typically in the low 70's. Water conditions are excellent and very safe. There are no waves inside the break wall where the swim takes place and wetsuits are allowed. Scenic bike on Shoreline Drive, Queensway Bridge and past the Queen Mary. The bike course is 11 miles in length with 2 loops of the course. Fast run course adjacent to Shoreline Village and the Marina.
